Sorry guys, had a great afternoon at the Uxbridge Autoshow, but unfortunately nobody was selling those rubber hose ends.
I searched high and low but the guy that had them last year wasn't there and none of the stalls had anything similar.

I'll keep looking and let you know if I see any,

OK Peter - thanks anyway.

I have tried using a piece of heat shrink sleaving on the end instead. Doesn't look quite so neat but it stops the outer braid from fraying.

I have nearly completed the plumbing of the fuel system now - pictures to be posted soon! I used/will use 22 hose clips in total! There must be a simpler way of doing it...

It is some time since I posted an update. House DIY and other things have been taking a higher priority but I hope to make much more progress in the Spring.

The week before Christmas, I got my Stage 2 Body parts. (Scuttle, dashboard blank and nose cone). So today, I slopped off for a couple of hours down to the garage for a trial fitting.

As you can see, I will have to re-think my AFM mounting which is a tad too high. (This is one of the disadvantages of not buying and fitting the bodywork first). I think I can drop the AFM mounting by about 25mm, but not sure yet where to route the air intake so that it gets cold air.

Other than that little problem, it was great to see the first body parts on the car.

I've got quite a long list of jobs now to tackle:
* Shape and fit the dashboard
* Re-mount the AFM
* fix floors
* fix seats
* layout dashboard and cut holes for gauges
* install all dasboard instruments, switches, etc
* wire up dashboard

And then on to the rest of the bodywork......

Hello Peter

My scuttle was a tight fit - just take a file to it in the appropriate places....

One thing to note is that fiberglass doesn't like square corners - it causes stress and cracks can radiate through the gelcoat. So if possible always radius the corners - for example the cutout where the scuttle fits over the bulkhead.

Thanks, Robin, for the advice. I think I had read that some time ago, but had forgotten, so a good timely remider.
Started drilling the holes for the dashboard surround today. A bit scary....I don't want to mess it up. I guess you get one chance at fitting this bodywork stuff!!

Unfortunately, not a lot of real build progress on the car to report over the winter.

However, I have ordered and collected my Stage 3 body kit. You can see pictures of all the parts collected last Thursday laid out in my garden here...

Peter,

good to see all those parts. I wonder how you start and how you do it regarding tools and lining up.

The spoiler I'm ordering too at the moment because it really looks great.
Can you tell where you bought those rubber shrouds. I looked at several places, maybe I got the wrong name at searching, but I need those too for SVA.

My sidepanels did't have the louvre in it at collection in dec 2004 because I didn't know how the pipes would run according to Terry. She was right! I still don't I must admit. Thinking of putting all 6 outside (3 per side) and then into cat and collector.

good to see you back.

First the easy answer. You can get the rubber shrouds from here.....

Your question about fitting is more difficult because I haven't started!

For cutting, Simon at Marlin suggested a jigsaw which sounds a bit scary to me!

The fitting order is as follows...
Fit Scuttle and dashboard.
Fit doors. Align with front edge plus a few mm with front of dashboard.
Fit door striker pin plates and striker pins.
Fit and align A panel with front edge of door.
Fit rear Tail section and align with doors
Fit side bonnets and trim to match 'A' panel and nose cone.
Finally fit bonnet hinge and then bonnets.

Sounds easy, eh??

I'll let you know how I get on and post picture as I go.

I used a jigsaw fitted with a metal cutting blade to cut the holes in my dash without any problems:

I used wide masking tape to mark where the various holes needed to be then drilled a hole (large enough for the jig saw blade) in the centre of the part(s) you want to cut out. Its then easy to cut close to the line with the jig saw and finish off with a half round file to neaten up the holes (not that it usually matters as the edge of the instruments cover the edge of the hole anyway).

Well I escaped to my lockup today and wheeled out the Sportster. My whiteboard tells me I haven't run the engine since the 19 November!

I really like those alloys I think that every time I see them! I'm tempted to get some Borbet A's as they come up on eBay for good prices, but I'm just not sure if that look would work on a the Sportster.

Dash layout looks nice, you've got a bigger wheel than us so you still see them place there!

What you could do with that extra vacuum hole in the intake boot that connects to the servo is get a one way valve from a later model, block the hole in the intake boot and one of the two in the throttle body and just use the one valve. We've done this on ours - you can get intake boots without the extra hole too:

Hi Guys,


be aware that the vacuum hose must be a solid one, because otherwise it will collapse.

I only first dicovered this when cutting in mine.
It's almost solids plastic, completely different compared to fuellines for example.

Thanks for the idea Patrick. I never have figured out what all those BMW pipes do apart from provide vacuum to the servo. I've decided to leave well alone on the basis that the designer must of had something in mind to design all those separate parts?
I have fitted a temporary 'loop' until I get some elbows (another for the Stoneliegh shopping list)

Not even the boffins on e30zone can figure out why they used such a complex system! I change it on our as we had the bit left over from the the engine swap in Richards car.

Well, day 2 of my holiday and another day spent down at the lock up.

Today, I refitted the painted AFM bracket, idle control valve and fuel pump relay box. And a temporary 'loop' enabled me to run the engine for the first time since 19 November!

It burst it life and ran well but I noticed a slight hesitation when you floor the gaz pedal from idle? I wonder if it's the angle of the AFM because I don't recall this the last time I ran the engine?

Also fitted the drivers seat so I can now rev the engine with my right foot.

So now I can pretend i'm driving!!

Finally, had a go at trial fitting the scuttle and 'A' panels...........

Well day 3 of my holiday and it was spent playing with the dashboard template and layout.(oh, and finished fitting the passenger seat)

My orginal layout didn't fit because I didn't measure the steering column position correctly. Good job it was all stuck on with bluetack!

It doesn't look much progress but it was a whole day fitting, removing, trimming, re-fitting, thinking, removing, etc etc etc.......

Once i'm completely happy, i'll cut the final dashboard.

Last day of my 4 day holiday today.

I spent most of the day working on cleaning up the door welds and making the cut-outs for the catches. Very time consuming and it all took a lot longer than I expected. (Estimating time to do this bodywork stuff is very difficult)

Mounting the catches was fairly straight forward but took time to get just right and neat.

Spent the final couple of hours this afternoon installing additional secruity at my lock-up garage, but for security reasons there are no photographs!!
