I checked one of my spark plugs today. This is after my 130 mile round trip to the Detling show a couple of weeks back.

This is not a brilliant picture but I can confirm that the plug is a nice 'biscuit' coloured brown. It looks like the Alpina C27 chip is a good match for this conversion. Idle is a little bit high at 950 rpm so I might see if I get a similar chip with a lower idle.

I also got back today from the DVLA my updated V5 registration document with the new engine number and capacity updated. I had read horror stories about the DVLA being a PITA about such things and demanding inspection reports, etc. But luckily not in my case. I just sent them the receipt for the 325i engine and a short letter explaining that I had modified the engine to be 2793cc. Just over two weeks later, back came my new V5 - no questions asked

It probably helped that the nice man at BMW service gave me the reg. number of the donor car for the new engine.

If anyone else is thinking of swapping engines, make sure you get a receipt for the new engine including the engine number and donor car registration number.

MOT number 4 passed on Saturday with no issues or advisories

All brakes working fine.
Engine emission test passed with flying colours at only CO = 0.290% and HC = 55ppm (Limits for my engine are 3.5% and 1200ppm)

BTW, if anyone is asked by the MOT tester the weight of their car, this is purely optional and the tester can bypass this question and issue the pass cert without entering a value.

Yes the new mot cents are boring. My replacement one from Swansea with the new reg on is a little less boring, as it appear that someone has randomly strung chains of letters with no vowels under all the English...

For those that followed the whole of my Sportster build story will know that my donor dismantling and the early stages of my build were carried out in a lock-up garage about 1/2 mile from my house. Towards the end of the build, I moved the Sportster to the garage attached to my house where the interior was trimmed and the car was finally assembled and finished off after painting.
I kept on my lock-up as the rent is peanuts and it's been a convenient place to store spare engines, infrequently used tools, tons of 'come in handy one day' parts along with old rugs, chairs, furniture, etc. It was also a convenient workshop for building the M20B28 stroker engine as I don't have to worry too much about muck on the drive, etc.
It had got to the point it was full to the gunnels so things had to go.............

After days of sorting parts and storage boxes, numerous trips to the dump and the scrap metal dealer, the lock up is now cleared of all redundant stuff. I had to be ruthless to clear the space. Remaining good parts and engines are now stacked neatly at the end of the of the garage leaving a nice clear 'car shaped' space.

So what could the reason be for all this activity?
A new project beckons, but what could it be that would entice me once again to spend hours in a dark unlit and unheated garage??
(And what in heaven caused me to be at the lock-up on a Sunday morning at 8am when this picture was taken

)

So the question is :- What have you selected for your build ?

I will plump for one of the new three wheelers.

Based on the number of spare engines Peter accummulated during his Sportster project, my guess is a 3 engine light aircraft!

I wondered how long it would be before you cracked..... Kit car building can be adictive.

Perhaps this time I will beat you to the finish (12 months head start is always an advantage.) So - are you going to ask Madabout to start a new forum so we can follow progress?

Some good educated guesses!
I do have a friend who has a pilots licence but currently no plane. We have discussed me building him a light aircarft and he lent me some magazines, but no it's not a plane with three engines.
Dennis must have spotted me lurking in the Porsche Speedster Owners club at Stoneliegh or on Chesil's stand in the main hall. It is car I have seriously lusted after and have given some serious research and consideration. I think it's a very pretty cute car and quite practical. But no, it was rejected for being just a bit too slow and old Beetle chassis are either rotten or costly.

Will it need a new forum section? Well I doubt it, as according to the owners club, there are only 16 members with cars in the 'in-build' status and I know that at least 3 of these are moribund.

VW,s have a pretty serious following, especially Campervans. There are lots of companies who treat the chassis,s and bodywork for rust. Its a well proven route. As for engines there are some serious upgrades for VW based cars, so power units are there if you want a powerful beast.
But like you Peter I too love the look of the Chesil ( Porche 356 ) Speedster.

However, a plane could be built in a garage. I rebuilt my Minimax in mine after it had been crashed ( not by me ). So it can be done.

Hi Peter

I had a look on the Royale site, and was quite surprised that this kit can be completed equally effectively in "period" style, or as a modern take. I really liked some of the more modern looking styles.

What engine are you planning to use?
