For the rear end, obviously the wimpy dana volvo rear end can not handle the added power. They are known to break axles when pushed just over the factory power rating. I have an exploder (explorer) 3.73 lsd, disk brake axle that will be going in. I will have to narrow the driver's side ~3" and run another passenger axle in the housing to get it to a 56.5" track width.

Just read all this whilst walking the dog :-)
Wow! You had a vision and went for it .... people amaze me with their ingenuity on projects like this ...hats off to you sir |
Great thread. Thanks for sharing your vision and hard work.
Keep em coming please :) Dave |
Thank you for the encouragement fellas. I have a long way to go!
|
VERY NICE WORK ....Looks great so far ...
|
Wow
Great work - could do with someone like yourself to turn my dreams into reality ;) |
275NART - Great project.
There is some serious fabrication/metal work going on there. Plus I love the fact your V12 engine only ended up costing a net $50! Good luck, Paul. :) |
Un-flipping believable.....
...and welding to die for best of luck Paul |
Only word I can think of is wow.
Awesome work. |
nice work.
Not your first bull ride, looks like its well planned. Jim |
Thank you! It's great to see everybody excited about my project.
Got it rolling on the wire wheels. I needed to remove a lot of material from the ouside of the calipers and also grind away the "nubs" on the inside of the wheel bore. It looks super long without the doors or front bodywork but the wheelbase is the correct 94.5-95" http://i.imgur.com/pltyd1W.jpg http://i.imgur.com/38Jno9C.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Kk7we00.jpg http://i.imgur.com/eCEnhIB.jpg http://i.imgur.com/njgFWuO.jpg |

Sorry for being a bit late to the party, but I've only just come across this thread. As everyone else has already commented, what a fantastic project.
That's quite some vision you have there and you also clearly have the skills to complete the car to a very high standard. Looking forward to seeing more. :) |
Looking fine Paul, anxiously awaiting your updates.

275NART – Have you seen Axel’s Dino 206 build thread?
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...ead.php?t=4789 As he also superimposes photos of the real car over the top of his 'work in progress'. Good luck, Paul. :) |

I have some progress to post on the engine soon. Cut my hand pretty good with an angle grinder so I need to take a few days away from the project. |
A little progress to report. I have been busy dressing up the engine a bit.
http://i.imgur.com/GnwdgUz.jpg http://i.imgur.com/WT5q5ML.jpg http://i.imgur.com/P8iuLTi.jpg new timing indicator plate which took a few weeks to get here. This allowed me to pull the distributor. http://i.imgur.com/if8O0yN.jpg http://i.imgur.com/5U0Zuxd.jpg I removed the upper valley cover and re-sealed it. http://i.imgur.com/ReOx4ui.jpg http://i.imgur.com/HnEm8p4.jpg Then I got a little busy with the wire wheel to get rid of some of the corrosion as well. |
http://i.imgur.com/kIi7z4p.jpg
next I can tackle those awfully ugly water rails http://i.imgur.com/rVrl5Yu.jpg http://i.imgur.com/dg0pMwu.jpg http://i.imgur.com/JHLAEFM.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ZfQu2iI.jpg powder coated the engine lift hooks. I'm sure it'll chip off but it looks better than rust! http://i.imgur.com/JHLAEFM.jpg http://i.imgur.com/dFVmiQ1.jpg Hardware needed to be replaced. http://i.imgur.com/Cx50s2N.jpg http://i.imgur.com/S0G2B5t.jpg Before the water rails go back on I cleaned and added a little sealant around the cam tower blocks. This is a common area for leaks and this simple fix supposedly keeps it from leaking further. http://i.imgur.com/KbzeNqG.jpg water rails back on. I will fabricate a new front crossover/fill pipe and powdercoat the cam covers soon. |
I have started fitting the engine. Even with the custom front end it is like putting a square peg in a round hole.
http://i.imgur.com/GUfJ6WS.jpg http://i.imgur.com/3NMICF0.jpg I want it to sit about 6-7 inches further back so the firewall will need to trimmed before I can even make the engine mounts. http://i.imgur.com/T2X2Aic.jpg I also need to move the pedal box over about 1-2". It would barely clear now but I want a little room. I am going to switch to an electric power steering column and move the steering shaft so it enters through the firewall much lower as well. http://i.imgur.com/fz0xMMg.jpg The alternator is also going to need to be relocated higher up. I will switch to a smaller higher amperage unit in the process. I'd like the engine to sit much lower down so I'm going to need to play with the steering rack mounts. I welded them a little high up on the crossmember to begin with. |
That engine is mahoosive!
