Which radiator?
Hi All
Is it possible to fit the original radiator to my Sammio from my herald 13/60 into the same position so that I dont have to add an expansion tank, and without it fouling the bonnet?
If not whats do you think is the best option

Hi Dave,
In practice, we've always had to lower the radiator, even when using the Navigator bonnet. On our latest car we made a simple steel bracket to hold it in place bolting into existing holes in the chassis. I'll take some photos as soon as I get a chance if it will help.

Hi Dave,
A couple of early photos of 274 radiator fit.
Now tidied up a bit but essentially the same. There's a steel 'joggled' bracket holding on to the bottom using existing holes and I cobbled up a steel rod restraint for the top using parts of the donor's bonnet hinge mechanism. It has a bolt into the top fixing of the radiator and a double nut above and below the existing bracket slot at the chassis end.
Not that the radiator does slope (oops!) forward and has an electric fan with a thermostat in the top hose.

On this car we mounted a renault Clio header and are currently looking for a good alternative. If we get enough demand we may be able to commission a small tank with correct connections for the existing heater hoses and a pressure cap.
Another alternative is to go the way Mr Towed has, in having an in line filler on an extended top hose running towards the bulkhead 'shelf'.

Not sure if you can clearly see how I set mine up in this picture -
As Andy says, I've just got a filler neck in line in the top hose from the 'stat housing, which then returns through 180 degrees almost immediately to run back to the radiator top connection.
If I did another I'd probably use the very elegant solution adopted by Phil J on his builds -
Not the best angle to see what he's done, but the header tank is the small alloy pot immediately behind and just on the far side of the rocker cover. Nice.

Apologies for hijacking your post Blooka......Mister Towed the first picture has an alloy rad while the second has what looks to be a standard rad was there a problem fitting the alloy rad?

- First photo is of Mr T's alloy radiator
- Second photo is of a different car (Phil's) with a different radiator & an nice expansion tank.
I think the only problem Mr T had with the alloy radiator was when he accidently knocked a hole in it and had to buy another one.

I think the 13/60 rad is a bit smaller than the Vitesse ones, but one thing to be wary of that i had with mine is that originally i lowered it too much and seeing as it's quite exposed under the front it was "squeaky bum time" a few times until i tinkered with it

It could prove easier to say than find one, the MG Midget 1500 has a filler point on top of the thermostate housing and a standard exspansion tank by the radiator cap. PAT

I'd probably go old-skool with a copper cored radiator if I built another rather than modern alloy. Can't remember which thread it was on but I believe someone far more qualified than I raised a very good point about the thermal conduction qualities of copper being far superior to aluminium in transferring heat from water to air.
My shiny alloy Honda Civic Type R racing rad might look cool (pun fully intended) but it definitely isn't as efficient as Phil's Ford RS 2000 jobby time-warped in from the 70's.

the ford rs 2000 rad is copper ,had it made at boston rads it has 64 copper tubes [std 48]looks a bit ruff as paint has come off.. it works very well and just fits nice under bonnet they can make them
as wide as you like the chap said they used them to cool v8s when a small rad is needed...the pipes to the pot also holds a bit more water as well ..works for me ...

Have been thinking about the rad whilst dealing with the nightmare that is my engine ECU. I too have the Type R Ali Rad but I'm just not sure it will look right so have pretty much decided to give it a dusting of satin black just to make it look a bit more retro.
