I know i'm not as active on here nowadays as i used to be and so things may have changed, but i am slightly disappointed in the replies to Towed's modification post, so i shall have to correct this situation and say.

Sorry to have seemed a Nervous Nellie, Mister T. - there's so little common sense (at least here in the States) these days, that one cannot be too careful... fellows balling up rags covered in linseed oil, chaps pouring MEK into electrostatic sprayers whilst dangling a cigarette between their lips, daft old bastrids cramming V8s into little British sporting cars....

No problem T-A-C, we have our fair share of the stupid gene this side of the pond too.
As for putting even a mid power V8 into a chassis that struggled to cope with its original 948cc motor that could't power a magimix, I think you might be better off putting the Spyder body over a bespoke chassis with some proper suspension and the V8 nestled a lot further back in the chassis. I believe your vehicle regs allow for that sort of mischief?
Over here we can't use a new chassis without complying with a load of crappy YooRooPee'n legislation about having a nasty plastic steering wheel for the driver's face to hit in a crash followed by a specialist inspection/test/new vehicle registration (IVA). It typically costs the average car builder another six hundred pounds (about a thousand bucks) to get it through the test, which is ten times the cost of the MOT test if you reuse an original unmodified original chassis.
I do wish we could just use a new chassis without all the hassle.

Mister T - and do please call me, "Joe" (of course, it's not my real name - my real name's "Dave" just like everyone else here) - thanks for taking the time and for the advice. We've not yet settled on anything other than the Sammio Spyder body style, and Chris and I do chat by telephone from time to time, so working things out - assuming he continues to be foolish enough to keep nodding his assent - shouldn't be too awfully difficult. Hopefully he'll look in on this thread and make the appropriate noises.
As to the regulations here, cars registered - as long as they incorporate original build plates - are what their build plates claim, so the Sammio will be titled as a 1954 Lancia, which exempts it from seatbelts, emission control standards, and nearly every other modern-day American autofoolery. They need brakes and lights, and front steering which seems not about to let loose, but beyond that, one's pretty much free to do as one likes.
I currently own Randy Corson's Corson 512(Bbi) clone, and we've done quite a bit of structural reinforcing to that as well. The Pontiac Fiero chassis was designed and built by the same folks who made the Herald - the only difference being that when they designed that old Triumph they were still sober. Decent enough for the GM 2.8 litre V6, but quite unhappy about having a 5 litre flat twelve jammed into that little hole - and thereafter seeming to have a frame made from an India eraser. Nursing it back to inflexibility could have had a thread of its own here, but that's all welding rod under the bridge now.
Chris - I know you're reading this, and I know you often complain that you're bored, and have far too much extra time on your hands. Give us your thoughts.

Like the intake trumpets Mr T are you fitting wheel arches to keep water and general muck away from the trumpets as i would imagine there will be a lot of muck flying around that area.
Was thinking of fitting a couple of intake trumpets to my car as the air box fowls the underside of the bonnet but have read that different lengths give different power results.
Looking forward to see your finished reshaped bonnet.

Yep, carbs are fully fitted and car's running better than ever. Probably now has about 95hp, which is what it should've had in the first place.
Won't be in the same league as yours for performance, of course, but I'm just happy that I don't get home stinking of petrol any more.
Are you home at the weekend? If so I'll drop in for a cuppa and a chat.

I might just take you guys up on that at some time ...The chances of us all catching up at a show are fairly remote , I guess but I might take a few days out later in the year and maybe 'explore Norfolk'..I would love to see all 3 cars together ...

Dropped round to see Phil after lunch and spent a very pleasant afternoon talking old race cars.
We lined all three Spyders up for a bit of a photo opportunity in Phil's garden, and he was good enough to shoot a bit of footage of me burbling around between the bushes -
Phil's suggested the idea of a summer barbecue for Sammio's at his place - he's got space in his back garden for cars and tents and it'd be nice to see more than three Spyders lined up in one place.
Nothing's set in concrete, no dates yet etc, but anyone interested?

Nice one MrT, good see the three lined up, they do look the part.
That big grin on your face happens to me every time i pass under a bridge locally whilst lifting off going down a hill, sheer music to the ears, even my youngest daughter is addicted to the burble, happy days.
