Default Gas guzzlers Z300s build

Well not quite a build yet. Hi my name is Andy and thanks to seeing WCAs 300 down at Brooklands I've decided to build one. I have always wanted to build a kit car but not really seen anything I've wanted to build. Looked at the Bertini, loved the backside but didn't like the front, plus I thought it was a tad expensive. Sold one of my projects last year after 7 years, a MX5 with a 3.5 V8 in it, and to fund this project I'm selling my 72 Reliant Scimitar GTE. Spoke to Chris today to get few more details about the kit and now looking forward to getting one ordered.
I've had a 2.8 Z3 for a few years and love it but it's to good to strip and turn into a kit so have picked up another one off ebay. However before I start stripping it I'm having it looked over by a friendly BMW mechanic, won't order or start on the kit until it's all okay.
Will be picking brains once I've started, especially on the wiring, so thanks in advance.
Really like the 300 as it's a mixture of several cars and not a copy of one of my favourite cars. Rather embarrassingly when WCA asked me what I thought his car was, when I saw it at Brooklands, I didn't know despite having a Z3. In my defence I had only looked at the exterior when he asked.

Andy

Hi Andy,

Glad to see my enthusiasm for the car rubbed off.

I hope you enjoy the build process. The great thing about using a modern donor is that things like the electrics normally work and there are readily available wiring img diagrams.

Cheers

Nick

Well here's the donor car, hopefully. It's got 105,000 on the clock which is nothing for these cars, air con, heated leather seats, wood effect dash, chrome windscreen surround and door handles and cruise control so quite well equipped. Been having a good look at it today seems reasonable, air bag light is on but I'm hoping that'll be just a reset. Very damp inside the car so hood may need reproofing. Hope to get it to my mechanic next week to have it checked over, putting the Scimitar up for sale today so hopefully get things moving.
Any of you other owners in the Surrey area, wouldn't mind having a look at your car if at all possible.

Hi Andy.

Great to speak with you again on Friday. Good base car, like you say 105K is nothing on a 2.8 engine, had one with 130K on which felt just fine. I am just looking for the vent modifications price for you.

If Nick's car is No.1, does that make the original buck outside our workshop No.0.5?

Sussed ha ha. Moving from one fibreglass car to another Hopefully get this how I want it quicker than I would've done the Scimitar.

Gas - Are you some kind of car stalker? I had a Scimitar I was doing up before I started on the 300S. Unfortunately I had to sell it before it was completed. Fortunately I sold it to someone on here who completed it for me (2 weeks after he bought it, grrr)

What I bought

What I sold

What it became

No stalker just love Scimitars, had four of them. Certainly a transformation, I've seen that on the Scimitar Forum. Mine wasn't quite as bad as yours, but had a lot of work done on it, be sad to see it go but just know I won't finish it.
Looks good in the sunshine

Got a couple of questions I'm sure someone can help with

1) Thought about getting an ageless reg plate, found a cheap one but the firm wants me to send V5 and mot to them in order to complete the process, is this the correct procedure?

2)Been busy looking at lights. In the 80's a law was passed about side repeaters but there was an exception if the front ones can also be seen from the side, is this still the case. Early E-types have good ones and I noticed the brand new E-type speedster only has front ones.

3) What insurance companies are people using and if you don't mind me asking what you paying for the z300s 2.8

Cheers Andy

Hi Andy,
1/ I've just bought a cheap Irish plate for the Kebeb. It came from a member of the plate dealers association and this is the message he sent me.

If your name is already printed on the V5 by DVLA there is no need to sign the V5 . if you are filling in the part that you are a new keeper then you need to sign the V5 .I shall now e mail you a transfer form V317 and details form to kimbob , please complete and return the transfer form V317 with your documents .

I sent the V5, V317 and (I think) MOT to him with a cheque for £80 transfer fee made out to DVLA.
4 weeks later, I've had the plates made and fitted and DVLA has sent me a new MOT with the new reg on it.

2/ I fitted small round repeater lights.

3/ I've used Classic Line for over 15 years for all my hot rods and other weird stuff. Not the cheapest perhaps but nothing ever seems to be a problem to them. They were happy to insure the car in standard form then will swop it over to the 250SWB when it's done.

Hope that's some help.

Cheers, Bob.

Andy - The rules for side repeaters are here:

Hope that helps, Paul.

Cheers for the replies.
Going to have to think hard about the lights as the ones I like are £110 each, lot of money for two lights.

Insurance wise, don't know why I didn't think of Classicline as used them before. Very helpful, now insured as is and will swap when car completed. Good rate as well only a bit more expensive than my daily Z3.

Number plate, I'm going to wait until further down the line, but it's in my ebay watch list, hope it doesn't sell in the meantime.

All I have to do now is sell the Scimitar and order from Chris. Anybody want to buy a Scimitar on ebay now

Cheers Andy
