Dvla
Have put the beast back together for DVLA inspection on Monday. This is to change the V5 disciption to reflect new body type. Have picked up a dateless plate at last DVLA auction. The plates will eventually be Black and silver. These are temp for inspection. She is starting to look like the 60's racer i wanted.

Hello there, I'm building a Sammio Cordite on the forum "next door".
I did a little bit of research into using traditional black & silver plates...
Traditional Classic Car Plates
- Black background with silver, white or grey letters & numbers
- Only allowed if car was manufactured before 01/01/73
Modern Car Plates
- White background for front & yellow background for rear
- Both with black letters and numbers
- Required if car was manufactured after 01/01/73
So my understanding is you can put modern style plates on an old car, but you can't put old style plates on a new one.
( Note: In my case, "new" is an over 30 years old Spitfire 1500 donor. )
Obviously you can do what you like, but I thought I'd mention it.
Good luck, Paul.

Old plates
Thanks for the advice. I am not looking to create a Ferrari copy, more 60's racer.Hope it will look authentic enough with old school colour they wont twig and stop me. If they do will have to use proper plates.
Good luck with your build , had a quick look ! you got your hands full.

Its is correct that pre only pre 72 cars can display a black plate, the risk if noticed, of putting such plate on a newer car is a £30 fixed penelty (no points), or a VDRS (defect notice cleared by an MOT station). As you will need the correct plates for the MOT anyway, this is no great hardship, it would take a board trafic orientaed officer to stick you on for this, the main bugbear with plates is mis representaion as the ANPR cameras can not read them, althought there are loads of them out there, for me I will have to use the modern look, but its just because od where I work. Ment pre 73 cars, and I had an "L" reg Morris 1800, I painted the plates black and the letters silver, I never got stopped but it was a long time ago.

I have a dateless plate in hand, but what would the DVLA accept on the V5 as vehicle descripttion?

I agree, looks good without plates, Chris can you send me the links for parts that you said you would, Poundland is limited to mesh, I've found most things myself online but a bit of direction would help, thanks.

On the subject of black plates, sticking a french "F" on the back would add to the confusion especially if when stopped you only speak "fronglais", you did not hear that from me though. Right!

The mirrors are toast, have some nice repo Morgan ones to fit further forward on the door. The beast is now up on axle stands for the winter. Still need to finish off cleaning up underneath sort the clearance on rear arches and exhaust.

DVLA change of descrition on V5
I am currently following the process to change the description of my Mazda MX5 on the V5. Wrote to DVLA with description of works and copies of invoice from Tribute and pictures. After 6 weeks they replied and requested me to bring the car for inspection at my local DVLA office. I met a very nice man called Neville who explained the process. He checked the cars identity, and the major components, chasis, drive train etc was unchanged. He was satisfied the car car had not been structurally altered and was as per the V5. I will now have more forms to fill in. I have to re register the car, they will except Tribute MX250 instead of Mazda MX5. Also it will now be a fixed coupe not convertible He said they may except Ferrari Replica or anything else that is not a branded name. I think it depends on who deals with you case. It is not illegal to drive your car and leave it as a Mazda MX5. This is just an option. I think it is worthwhile and will save confusion at MOT time and also if you want to sell it in the future. Will let you know how the next lot of paperwork goes, so far so good.

Good to hear that you aren't having any issues with the process. Like you say it's not a legal requirement, but it's good to dot the "i's" and cross the "t's" when it comes to paperwork. Keep us informed.
