I still think a mx5 based G46 is possible but i have enough to be getting on with.

I really hope it is possible it is what I have just about committed to doing. My plan is :

*Get and MX5

* Take out front & rear subframes along with drive train.

* Bolt them onto a custom built chassis

* Drop a G46 on top

* Paint it Electric Blue Candy

* Drive off into the sunset

What could possibly go wrong?

I have a confession...........

I am a big kid

Today it was foggy - i couldn't get on with the bodywork so i played abit on the interior.
I had been collecting bits and pieces when i saw them cheap and i had an idea how it was going to come together.

First up i finished the instrument panel and bolted on my nice shiny Nardi wheel.

Then i took off the original mazda mirrors - they were one of the last reminders of what the car started as. Now in there place are some bullet style mirrors a little worn but i dont mind i want that old car look it will keep people guessing what it is.

After lunch the sun came out. I looked at the rear of the car - i couldn't face another day of sanding - bonding paste - sanding.

I was looking for something more interesting to do....

Trevors car is finished and as happy as i am for him, i am jealous that mine still isn't finished.

I told you im a big kid

So i put the headlamps in the bonnet and i went looking for something to inspire me. What i did was this......

I know I shouldn't of - there is still lots of finishing to do but hey ho it made me smile.

Its only the first coat of high build undercoat - it needs 2 more and wet sanding before the darker top coat will be applied.

So what do you think - like all kids im a bit impatient but on the up side i still believe anything is possible.

Next week i promise i will continue on finishing the rear - well if the weather holds out for me.

I like the MX5 steels it's rolling on.

Bolt a set of these up and you've got the Dunlop racing wheel look at a fraction of the price (it's what I'd intended to do with my Spitfire style steels before deciding to go with wires).

Good luck finishing the bodywork.

Great thanks
The wheels are actually off a BMW Mini and i chose them because of the similarity to the Dunlop wheel but the centres i had been watching were off the old beetle and they cost lots more so I thank you for your tip.

Ebay even has the Dunop decals they will be added before the end

Glad you found the link useful.

Before going down the wires route I did find a supplier of replica Dunlop knock-on alloys.

I can't remember the exact price but they were about six hundred quid!

Each!!

Plus VAT!!!

Plus adaptors!!!!

Well the weather was good to me for another Sunday

Its a little restrictive building with no garage - its one of the reasons my windscreen and roof are still in place.

Works been hard though and i got about 3 hours out there in the cold.
I cut the holes and mocked up the rear lights - I will wire them when i cut the boot lid in.

I got a bit more of the bodywork sanded down - its hard to see how well when its a multitude of colours so i undercoated a bit more.

The difference in colour is the door is still wet it dulls as it dries.
Im begining to see how it will look- but the top coat connaught green is much darker.

I always knew what seats i wanted and they finally appeared on ebay - now they are mine = pics to come next time.

Now heres a question

Chrome boot rack or not?
I have seen the XKSS with them and it would be useful when it makes it s way to the gathering or for weekends away.

Its dark out there 4.30pm roll on summer i miss the sun

Chrome boot rack or not?

Sure would be useful for touring.

I think it'll suit your car as the back end is smooth and simple and you don't have a head fairing.

I saw one fitted to an RSK replica once and it made the back look very cluttered what with the head fairing and twin chrome engine grilles fitted.

One thing I've noticed though is that 99 out of 100 boot racks I've seen recently have been fitted the wrong way round: the raised bar doesn't go to the rear to stop your luggage sliding off the back when you're loading it, it goes to the front to stop your samsonite case from shooting forward and mashing your face into the windscreen when you crash!

Ok its cold out there. I considered scraping the ice off and tackle some more bodywork.
But in addition to the cold my wife is ill, my boy wants to be entertained and they both want to go christmas shopping.

At least i bought myself a present

Just what i wanted - im sure i will get socks on christmas day.

So we are a resoureful lot on here - im looking for diamond stitched black vinyl to retrim the door cards etc

I have looked and its not easy to find especially here in the UK can anyone point me in the right direction - maybe Garry can help as he has built rods and customs.

As ever thanks guys

Try giving FlatLands a call.

http://www.flatlandsengineering.co.uk/fle/fle_bgkp.htm

If you look at their gallery photos you'll see that they use a lot of diamond pattern vinyl for their trim.

Nice seats by the way, going to look great!

Hi,great project, looking really good. I feel guilty having a garage seeing what you're doing ouside!!! Will it need an SVA/IVA? If not how much further can you go modifying a shell without needing one?

I dont think oy will need sva
Underneath the monocoque is untouched - the front wings - bonnet boot and bumpers unbolted.
I did trim the arear around the rear lights but this was single skin and i dont believe it was structural.

I have been applying the first coat of undercoat so that the surface imperfections are more obvious. I will fix are the defects then two to three more coats of undercoat.
Sand the body with 400 and then two to three coats of topcoat and then cut back and polish
I know its still a MX5 underneath but with coilovers and the new exhaust and engine mods i will be quite happy.
Thanks for your comments the hardest thing with this build outside is motivation - some days i dont want to go out there

A little more done

They look like beach buggy seats available from FlatLands engineering in my neck of the woods:

http://www.flatlandsengineering.co.uk/fle/fle_bgkp.htm

They're listed at £195 with loose covers or fully trimmed for £290. I'm guessing those prices are each and plus vat & delivery. They also recommend inclination wedges to mount them at the correct angle. Nice looking seats though.

Hi Roybo
The front of the roadster is a modified E type Jag series 1
I have the headlamp covers so it should be quite sleek when its all together.

I originally was considering the G46 for my project and i still believe it could have worked especially with a couple on here trying to retro fit full windscreens and hoods to their G46's

I have seen the G46 from fairly early in its infancy - it is a pretty car but not as "English" as i wanted. If money wasn't an object then a long nose D type would be on my drive.

Its not easy at the moment - the weather is not always kind, but its getting there.
