I modified mine.......I drilled out the rivet assy that allows the mirror to fold and replaced it with a shallow head nyloc & shallow head bolt.
This then allows you to set the force at which the mirror folds....you can adjust it (and then threadlock to be sure) so that bodywork damage doesn't occur.....this way you don't need a plate behind the mount, just big washers.
