Default American cousins

I was having a browse for seat styles and I came across this -

It's going to have a Cobra body but I think it would better-suit a Ribble/Miglia skin. I like the aly dash - flat with simple curves at each end.

Has anyone seen Kirkey Vintage seats for sale in the UK?

They are good value in the States......until you add postage.

Nice, but all those spikes sticking out behind the seat wouldn't pass IVA...

(Yes, I know they're temporary rivets).

But they would make me drive carefully.

demon tweeks etc sell Kirkey racing seats (v. expensive) so I expect there is a UK distributor.

I saw a thread somewhere of a DIY equivalent that looked great

I made contact with the distributor today and they don't hring in the Vintage.Shame. I have drawings along the lines that you mention for a DIY version. I was looking around for more ideas when I came across the Vintage. I had considered cutting down a pair of Kirkey Intermediates, but taking a grinder to seats at £320 per pair would take a mixture of courage and stupidity.

It's back to making some Sea Fury inspired replicas.

Very nice work and lovely detailing. I guess the Liberator seat came out of a field in Norfolk Viriginia rather than my neck of the woods.

Funnily enough, my other hobby is metal detecting and I have permission to search the site of a WWII airfield within walking distance of my house.

What I'm actually looking for are Viking, Saxon and Norman coins and relics, which the site is littered with (here's the result of eight hours detecting in November) -

- but there's an awful lot of debris from the base too. They operated Stirlings, Lancasters and Mosquitos between 1942 and 1946, losing 170 aircraft on combat and training missions, at least one of which crashed into a church nearby, so there's always the chance that I could unearth some long lost bomber seats. I doubt they'd be in as good condition as the one in the hot rod thread though.

Interesting debate about the use of solid vs pop rivets. In WWII everything would've been made as cheaply and quickly as possible so pop rivets would've been a godsend.

Post war, however, and quality of engineering became paramount again. I was taught reaction bar riveting in week one of 'hacking and bashing' (basic engineering) at RAF Halton, No1 School of Technical Training, in the seventies and the Martin Baker ejection seats I worked on were 90% solid riveted together with pop rivets only used on blind or unstressed panels.

I had intended to make my own seats btw, but the time element eventually killed that idea as I wanted to finish the car this century.

Good luck finding/making some suitable seats.

The item on the left is the bonnet catch from a Saxon Sammio. Those wooden wheels looked great.

I'm not sure - the RAF operated Liberatiors from UK though IIRC?

I like those seats a lot. Wish I had seen them before importing my own Ali bucket seats which also came from the states.

Ribble do some similar in GRP and can also get them in aluminium which are lovely but costly also due to shipping.

Scimjim, are/were you a gazelle pilot?

No - I'm an engineer. (One of my projects was replacing all of the low-back seats with high-backs )

Small world -one of my projects was removing all the underwater ejection systems from the Phantom and Buccaneer seats when they came off the Ark Royal.

I guess a background like that predisposes you to madcap ideas like building your own car.

BTW The British did indeed operate the B-24 in B-24E form during WWII from several bases throughout the UK, used for Convoy protection, transport and some limited ASW work as well.
Another Blue Job here Loadmaster 1982 through 1990.

One of my old squadrons, 206 Squadron operated the Liberator for a couple of years from 1944-46 for coastal command. 206 were based at St Eval in Cornwall before moving to RAF Leuchars during this time.

I remember pictures of them lining the room reserved for standardisation visits up at Kinloss- staring at them for inspiration whilst being asked questions on ASW tactics or suchlike!

(Sorry for the thread creep )

This is just the sort of conversation that attracted me to this forum! One starts with some Kirkey seats and arrives at RAF Kinloss by way of some Saxon coins. Just to continue the theme, this arrived for me in the post today. An ornament for my office wall.

Didn't the fish mind?

I also wore green and although I always loved aircraft and flying I just never fancied becoming a crab to do it.

Ha ha! I guess you were a bootneck then?

I wonder how many people will get the link between the crab nickname and the colour of the RAF uniform shirts? Interestingly, pubic lice are now pretty much extinct in the western world...

Oh, and I spent 23 years in the RAF and still hate flying.
