Apparently his mistake was making an exact replica.

Lotus/caterham cars did the same thing to Westfield some years ago,and they of course won their case.

But Westfield hit back, and built another replica 7, and Lotus/Caterham took them straight to court once more, but Westfield had done their homework this time, because the replica looked exactly like the Lotus, but there was not one measurement of anything at all on the car that was exactly the same as the Lotus.

In fact, the judge threw the case out of court and said, because there was no measurement the same, then the car was similar to the lotus but the copyright had not been infringed, because " similar" is not the same as "exact copy"

Take note all ye that are cringing!

As far as I'm aware Porsche have never bothered trying to shut down the many small manufacturers of replicas/homages to their back catalogue of historic road and race cars, and Bonhams don't seem to have a problem selling them on.

No damage seems to be done to the Porsche reputation (still the most profitable car manufacturer in the world?) by the plethora of beetle based Speedsters, Spyders and even the odd (very odd) front engined, water cooled Ford Escort based 911, and it's not like a potential customer for a new 911 is going to snap up a Covin 911 off ebay instead anyway.

The official response to such replicas from Porsche appears to be a dignified silence. Contrast that with the bad press received by no less than Carroll Shelby -

I'm just hoping I don't get a Lancia lawsuit launched against my own homage to the D24. I wonder if I could counter-sue for loss of faith in the company now they just rebadge crappy Chryslers?

I am wondering how my 'homage to the Maserati 300' is going to go down at the official Maserati display celebrating 100 years of the marque. The only thing that is close to original is the logo engraved on the steering wheel boss.

Along the same lines as Mr Towed, as far as I am aware, Jaguar do not seem to have a problem with all the various replicas of any of their cars. Most of the nicer cars have been, and still are being cloned, C Types, D Types, XKSS, XK 120, 140 and 150.

And like Porche, they don't seem to have suffered as a result.

The world is a richer place for having all these wonderful cars of all makes, built and driven around, and it gives so much pleasure to so many people at shows etc.

To have such a beautiful car crushed, amounts to bitter vandalism . My sympathies are with the builder, imagine how he must feel!

I think Mercedes issue it that they have only ever produced 2 good looking cars, the Gullwing and the Pagoda.

With such an embarrasing trail of mediocre designs they want to hang onto the only two decent ones.

I bought a Type 3 Squareback to use as a donor for a Covin Speedster back in the day. Just before they went bust.

The Squareback cost me £100 and had a cool reg - WEL 9J - I doubt I could get one for that price today!

He should have got one of these-

Duesen Bayern Mystar

The Mystar (translated: Master) was introduced in February 2002 and was the company's first car model. The exterior of the Mystar resembles that of the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL, and its interior is taken from the BMW Z3. At the first glance, the Mystar cannot be distinguished from the original, if not for its different bodywork dimensions, hence not considered under European law to be a copy. The bodywork of the Mystar is made out of fiberglass. The hood can be opened completely. The car is available with four- and six-cylinder engines which offers 140 to 231 hp, and in left- or right-hand drive.
