Default Front Indicators position

So I think we all know now that the Marlin mounting position for the front indicators are not SVA compliant.
Front indicators need to be less than 400mm from the edge of the car (wing) and minimum of 350mm from the ground.

I've been toying with the idea of temporarly mounting some indicators just below the headlights (like Cateram 7's) and was looking for a cheap SVA compliant option.

I haven't finished with the protype ideas yet but I thought i'd see what you guys think and if you can think of any drawbacks.

Pictures here.....

They were meant to be temporary but might even become the permenant solution?

Any thoughts or improvement ideas?

thanks

Peter

The only draw back I can think of is how far back they are. I think there are rules on visible angles. This issue is one that I plan to tackle this weekend, I've not looked at the numbers yet. Good idea though will give it a try

Ah, that's a good point.
Just checked the visibility angles in the manual and the side indicators have to meet an incredible 80 degrees to the centre line of the car. (Probably why Cateram's have those horrible British Leyland side indicators mounted on the edge of their wings!)
If I mount them where i've suggested, i'll have to mount them on stalks to bring them forward in front of the front wheels. Not very pretty.

Maybe i'll just slap them on top of the wings!

Oh well, back to the drawing board.........

My plan was to put them on a stalk the brings them up and out to the side. I've got some tube left over from making the rear bar.

I think the wing mounting looks best. You would only need the 1 wire (metal bits of the wing brackets should provide an earth OK. If you used a black wire and zip tied it to one of the wishbones a doubt if you would even notice it. I think I am going to try this option myself. Will be looking for some suitable indicators tomorrow!

Ended up running out of steam before getting to the indicators today! I will probably do something similar to your second prototype!

EDIT: oops forgot I was using Richards computer!

EDIT2: actually, like prototype 3 best for SVA!

Here's some pics of what we've got:

A small rotation will bring them even further out but then they get a bit too close to the front wings. As positioned now they are within the 40cm SVA regs.

Also wound the suspension up so the headlight are about 52cm above the ground!

Here's the rest of them finishing it off. Wires need a tidy but that's it:

Very nice, especially the idea of putting the fuel hose over the tubing.
Well done,

Peter

Vindicator took my front bumpers off as they failed the SVA anyway and put a tube into the bumper mounting with a bracket on it - basically a triangular section welded on that put the indicator in the right place - will take a pic tonight when I get home...

It's great when I asked Terry if there was anything on the Sportster that I needed to know about regarding SVA the only things should could come up with was emissions and exhaust noise...... arg!

My SVA man didn't like the bumpers as the ends weren't rolled round..... Have put the rear bumpers on but not the front yet - need to unwire and rewire the indicators through the holes...

It does say something in the SVA about turned in ends on the bumpers. I think the fact that the bumpers are bent in at the ends should be enough - but I guess it is down to the individual SVA man in the end.

Shall we see what Terry has to say?

The outside edge is turned in but the inside edge isn't - think thats what my issue was...

I'd give their technical line a call and ask for Simon. He actually takes the Sportsters for their SVA's and should have the answers.

Won't putting that edging stuff around them do? I don't remember Stuart having a problem a problem?

Good point, I will add edging stuff

I have to say I was never impressed with the technical advise I got from them, but I suppose its worth a shot.
