Default DIY custom gauges

I'm a long way off needing to build an instrument panel, but I do know that I'm going to want an oversize tachometer (5" plus). There aren't many about, even from the aftermarket gauge manufacturers and they're rather expensive.

I've made gauge faces before now and I had considered fitting a tach mechanism into an early Herald speedo housing, but now I'm looking at a different solution.

Many modern cars are fitted with stepper motor driven 'dial' gauges and the motors are readily available. Driving them isn't too hard with a bit of electronics/programming knowledge.
