Smile Importing a Ford RS200 kit to the USA

I recently had a reasonably good experience importing a Ford RS200 kit car to the United States from the United Kingdom, and I figured that I would share my knowledge in case anyone wishes to do the same. I know I could have used a bit more information when I started the process.

The RS200 kit that I chose to purchase is manufactured by RS Automotive ( They don't have much information on their website, but the head man Bill does respond well to e-mail ( In fact, his e-mail communication is so good that I think I only spoke to him on the phone twice. Their kit is a sufficiently faithful reproduction of the RS200 frame and body, with modifications allowing a Merkur XR4Ti or Ford Sierra to donate many parts, such as the steering, front suspension, interior, and wiring harness. I am impressed by the quality of the components *at first glance*, though I have not yet had the opportunity to assemble the car. The parts were well-packed in the crates that RS Automotive had built. The only negative to my experience involves the build time after my deposit was paid. I submitted initial payment on February 26, and the shipping crates were available for pickup on August 23. So, expect good quality from the kit, but also expect to exercise patience.

Having the kit sent over to the United States was not difficult at all. RS Automotive had two very nice crates built. I could throw in some shingles and build two nice sheds for my backyard with the broken-down crates. After the kit fabrication was complete, RS Automotive packed and sealed the crates, and then let me know they were available for pickup. I called Miami Valley Worldwide ( and asked them to pick up the crates, handle all of the freight and customs stuff, and have everything show up in my city. I needed to complete a credit app and fill out a power of attorney so that they could pay all of the shippers and the customs brokers, after which they would just send me a single bill. I also provided them with the dimensions of the crates, the location of the crates at RS Automotive, and mentioned that they fall under Harmonized Tariff Code 8707.10.0020 (which results in a 2.5% import tax). The total shipping time took 4 weeks, which I consider extremely fast.

Just add a Merkur donor car and the engine/gearbox of your choice!

I hope this helps anyone that is considering an RS200 kit in the United States.

Here's some multimedia content for those interested. First, we have a short time-lapse video of the uncrating ceremony:

Also, here are some pictures of a completed kit. This car was the RS200 seen in the movie Fast and Furious 4, and as you can see it went together quite well. Yes, this is an RS Automotive kit, and I can confirm that everything is identical to the components that I received.
