ok where do i start
Collected the body on Saturday - it took me forever to get there and the weather was miserable.
But as i loaded the body the sun came out and i took the wife and son to the beach at Boscombe and watched the air festival off the Bournemouth coast.

This morning I was excited to get the body over the rear of the MX5
Grr it didnt fit the measurements seem about right but it refused to go anywhere near where it was supposed too.

This isn't surprising as it wasn't made to fit.
All along I was convinced that the G46 was the better bet but in the end i opted for a 550 rear. Its just too shallow.

So I am back to making something - it will still use the 550 rear but heavily modified
No pics this time as it is in its very early mock up stage - if all else fails I will have to buy the G46 rear but im sure I can work some magic.

And too think i was worried about cutting a boot lid into it hehehe

A bank holiday weekend and i should be able to get lots done ....
but the weather is playing about and everything i i try to do seems to be fighting me so i have decided to leave it for the day.

I need to rebuild my enthusiasm so here so pics (thanks to the practice pics thread)

There is a glimpse of the rear end but its still to high but the front is coming along nicely.

And for all those curious what lies beneath.....

Not a huge V8 lump but a reliable and willing powerplant

I will try to get more done tomorrow....

Default some progress finally

I have been meaning to update the build but progress has been slow and boring = yeah i did spend a few hours undersealing the chassis but all i had to show for it was a stiff neck and an aching back - im starting to feel my age

The big job of creating a rear shell was causing me trouble.
I had looked at lots of 50's sports and race cars and i liked lots but how do i get the elements i like into the roadster.

The costin jaguars and tojeros caught my interest as did the listers and aston DBR1 but i kept hearing Garry's words of wisdom on my head "Its not a replica" and his advice "try to think 1950's"

So the resin and foam and some pieces of ply came together and finally we have a rear.
Its not as i first imagined but I think its sticks to the Sammio's idea.....

This shows the rear as it was being mocked up

The body was created so it looks right with the roof up
The angle of the rear of the hood flows straight down the boot

This is how she looked tonight

So still a fair way to go - but i was getting jealous of all you filling sanding filling sanding

Note the twin exhaust it doesn't sound like a wimpy 1600 now. It is a classy Borla exhaust.
The recessed monza style fuel filler is plumbed in too.

Still have to cut that boot out - i think i will be ok though

I have got more achieved than i thought.

Default have you done this before?

Do you leave the bit in between or change that as well? What do the wheels do on the front wings do?

The bit in between will be blended in with the front and the rear and when painted will look seamless.
The little wheels allow a hefty bonnet to slide into its closed position not pretty but how many secrets live beneath pretty fibreglass bodies

I have been trying to find suitable parts for the roadster
I missed out on an auction for a classic styled interior mirror can any one identify it or suggest a place to get one

Try 356 speedster repro parts suppliers as it looks similar to the type fitted to those. Karmann Konnection might be able to source you a genuine one, but their prices are ususally a bit arm and a leggy.

http://www.vw-online.co.uk/

You obviously need a header rail to fit that style, so it's not an option for those of us with the perspex fly-screen fitted. I've gone for one of these from Europaspares:

https://www.europaspares.com/5/MIRRO...R_MIRRORS.html

Not cheap but I think it looks really 50's period and it's superb quality.

Good luck finding something suitable.

Default update

Its almost November and the weathers ok well for a few hours anyway.

The wood from the previous pics has gone and fibreglass and bonding paste have replaced it. The rear corners of the rear are close to shape and just need final shaping.

The position of the rear lamps is marked out - its begining to look like a car again.

Its a bit lonely here sometimes i know that my project is a little different to most of yours but any comments and suggestions are always welcome.

ps
The rear suspension will be modified sooner or later either coilovers or more likely because im poor adjustable spring units to adjust the ride height

I think that you are doing a great job. The car will be unique and will turn a lot of heads. I respect the amount of imagination and effort that doing something like this takes. Have fun!

Thanks John I really appreciate that

Hows progress on your project? Have you started the miata frame yet?
If you are leaving it the standard wheelbase the PPF should make it easier to construct the chassis. I wish I had the balls to go that route but i have to work outside in front of the house.

Thank you Pat
Yes roll on next summer this forum needs some group pics, Im sure we will get a lot of interest when the Sammios are out and about.

I intend to have the body finished before the end of the year and then the paint will have to go on early next year I will have to dig out my gazebo as a make shift paint booth.

Hello Mark, I haven't started the frame yet. Though I have built enough of them that I pretty much know how it will be constructed. I am waiting for my body to arrive. Gary is widening it right now and I hope to get it shipped with in a week or two.

I am hoping to keep the stock Miata wheelbase. Like you said this will make the build much easier. I will start a build thread when I get started. John

Yes you are right and this is similar to the idea i had in my head when i first visited you.

The front went on so easily that i was dissapointed when the rear didnt just drop over. But being a monocoque i had to leave most of the rear and fibreglass around it - its getting there.

I like to think that the Sammio ethos is still in there. Its inspired by lots of cars but is not a copy of any. Mike and yourself have been a great inspiration and every visit gave me lots to think about.

I still think a mx5 based G46 is possible but i have enough to be getting on with.

I want to thank everyone on this forum - its like a support group for builders.
Our nearest and dearest think we are "playing" with our car. But in truth its hard sometimes and seeing others in a similar situation is comforting.

It will all be worth it when the sun is shining and we all meet up with silly grins on our faces. See you all soon

"We choose to build a Sammio in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too."

...is what John Fitzgerald Kennedy would've said if he'd been around today and had been into kit cars instead of space travel. And actresses...
