Marlin Cabrio project up for sale
Posted by Madabout News on Thursday, March 31st, 2005 at 11:55 PM

Marlin report that the mid-engined Rover K series-based 5EXi has proved so popular since its launch last year along with the continued success of the Marlin Sportster making big demands on the company’s time that now is an appropriate time to put the Cabrio project up for sale.

Marlin believe this will provide the perfect opportunity for someone to get a head-start in kitcar manufacture. "It’s sad but we simply don’t have the resources to give the Cabrio the sales and marketing effort it deserves," explains Marlin’s Terry Matthews.

"The outstanding reaction to the 5EXi, and the continued demand for the Sportster, has taken us into the heart of the modern sportscar market, with stands at mainstream shows and greater involvement in motorsport.

"The Cabrio still has a very loyal following in the traditional sportscar market, and the potential is there for even more sales, but it would be a mistake to spread ourselves too thin. "We pride ourselves on professional marketing and sales, quality manufacturing and superb after-sales service and we just couldn’t keep up those standards if we continued with our current model range. Something had to go."

For the £40,000 asking price, a would-be kitcar manufacturer would get body moulds, chassis jigs and other components, plus all sales rights and a database of existing Cabrio owners, who continue to buy parts for their cars. Marlin could also continue to offer a manufacturing service for the new company.

The Cabrio’s styling is a subtle development of the traditional Marlin design that established the company as a major force in the kitcar market. The semi-monocoque/torsional box frame chassis accepts Ford Sierra donor mechanicals, with engine options including BMW (four and six-cylinder), Rover V8, Ford four-cylinder and V6 and even the Volvo 2.5.

Marlin’s policy of continual development has benefited the Cabrio over the years and many time-saving innovations have been incorporated to reduce the build time without compromising quality.
