New to kit cars
Hi all, first of all hope this is in the right section.
I am just about to start my first build and am not 100% sure I understand the SVA set up, are kit cars controlled by emissions ruling generally or does it come entirely down to the original year of manufacture of the donor vehicle?
Also what is the stipulation for the retention of the registration if I am installing a non donor engine and gearbox but essentially retaining the running gear chassis and some of the body, can I keep the old plate?
I would assume both these questions have a number of differing answers dependant on the situation and also I suspect the SVA people on the day.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi and welcome to the forum
An explanation of the SVA emmissions can be found here
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/kb/?...try&EntryID=84
If you are retaining the chassis of your donor vehicle then that is a different ball game. If the chassis is unmodified then it won't need an SVA at present. What kit do you have in mind?

John,
Thanks for that was pretty sure such an obvious issue would have been discussed on here but had not yet found that section.
Am getting a shelby mustang, eleanor, something I have always fancied.

I guess you must be talking about this one...
I believe it uses the Sierra as the donor. Not sure to what extent it is played around with but the manufacturer seems to think it doesn't need an SVA test so you won't have any of those worries.

John,
Thats the one. Yes the manufacturer does not think the SVA check is required but would rather be sure that it is covered incase by the time it is finished it has changed, also to ensure I understand the rules sufficiently not to do something which changes that theory.
Also in my experience every person reads the rules differently and whilst it might not have needed an SVAin the past that is no hard and fast guarantee it will not in the future.

Nice car but how are you going to carry your kit or do you live next to the beach?

I was just guessing from your sign in name that you were a windsurfer hence the need for a set of wheels for transporting boards, sails etc.

Ah am with you Ken, have a Landrover 101 which we put a diesel engine in last year when we re-built it for dragging the wet stuff around, it also got us down to the sahara and back last year, maiden voyage of 5000 miles, not too shabby.
