A Zetec will fit a type 9 or MT75 gearbox. You will have to search the internet to find others who have done it, and get a list of parts to enable the clutch to work.
There are a few mods that you will have to do that I know of
1. You will need a 'water rail' to move the thermostat as it is likely to hit the bulkhead.
2. Depending on if your choice you can either keep the Zetec fuel injection or either use aftermarket fuel injection or use carbs. Unless you stick to the standard Ford setup you will have to get a new ECU.
3. There will be a lot of wiring changes (because of 2 above).
4. You will have to get engin mounts made up.
5. You will need a new exhaust system. The Zetec and pinto exhausts are on different sides so as a minimum you will need a new manifold.

I costed up the change to come out at about £3k including getting a secondhand Zetec.

Thankyou for that Chris. It seems very complicated and probably a bit beyond me to go down that route - maybe I'll just stick to the Pinto. Thanks for taking the trouble to reply - much appreciated.
